A major power project under construction in Rajasthan required transport of 6 extra-high-voltage transformers (each weighing 285 MT) from a manufacturer in Bhopal to the project site near Jaisalmer — a 900km journey involving 2 river crossings, 14 railway crossings, multiple weight-restricted bridges, and passage through desert terrain with no highway infrastructure for the final 80km. The project timeline was critical — transformer installation was on the critical path for the power plant’s commissioning schedule. Any delay would impact power supply commitments.

SSL coordinated with Rajasthan PWD, NHAI, Railway authorities, and Rajasthan police for all statutory permits and escort arrangements. Each transformer required a dedicated 14-axle hydraulic trailer convoy with pilot vehicles, escort vehicles, utility crew vehicles, and emergency response vehicle. 24/7 movement monitoring from SSL’s control tower.
Outcome
All 6 transformers delivered to project site within the project’s critical path timeline — no schedule impact. Zero incidents during transport. All 6 movements completed within 5% of estimated cost (vs industry standard +/- 20% for complex ODC projects). The power project commissioned on schedule, delivering 800MW to the Rajasthan grid.
